Celebrating 150 years of the Mahatma

Oct 2, 2019…the Nation celebrates the 150th birth anniversary of a person, difficult to describe in terms reserved for ordinary mortals. An extraordinary person – a politician, saint, philosopher, nationalist, humanist, thinker, strategic visionary and a humble humanist…all this and much more. How do you even get to celebrate him and his message? Most of us choose the easy way out – garland his photo/statute, give long speeches, talk about Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satya (truth), distribute sweets and the go on with our daily lives. Little are we realising that we have reduced him into a ritualistic symbol bereft of

If there was any recent event that attracted more eyeballs that a cricket match that India played in, it was the watching of the final stages of the Chandrayaan-2 (moon mission) on September 6, 2019 as the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) tried to get the Vikram Lander to have a soft landing on the South polar region of the moon. While several people expressed dismay and disappointment at ISRO losing contact with Vikram (meaning ‘valour’ in Sanskrit and celebrating Vikram Sarabhai, considered the father of space technology in India), several others saw this as part of an expensive learning
